Catalonia is a country of Mediterranean Europe, with a GDP of over 200 billion euros and a GDP per capita of more than 28 thousand euros. With an area of 32.106,5 km2, it has a population of 7.5 million inhabitants.

The branches that have gained more weight in the industrial structure during the last 15 years are: energy, sanitation and waste management, power, chemical industries and pharmaceuticals.
Regarding the agricultural sector it represents 0.9% of total GVA in Catalonia and 3.6% of GVA including the food industry. Final agricultural production stands at around 4,300 million euros, 65.12% corresponding to livestock and 32.07% to agriculture.
The external sector is one of the strong points of the Catalan economy. Catalonia has a high degree of trade openness (a 116.9% of GDP) in line with other small and open economies in Europe.
